Notes on NES Games
I've rebought a Twin Famicom at the end of 2023 after having sold one, and all my other NES stuff, a decade ago. So I've been looking at Fami games again and picking out a few things I still would like to have. At the end of 2024 I got a flash cart, so have been trying lots of new stuff.

Alfred Chicken | ||

Was always kinda grossed out by the shrunk-down, grubby-looking graphics compared to the SNES version, but it fits better on the NES I think. Actually feels pretty good and not Eurojanky.
Aussie Rules Footy | ||
This was one of the big games when I was in primary school. I was never very good at it, not sure I even one the grand final. Not sure I even have an opinion of it, maybe it's not very good, I probably wouldn't recommend it to anyone, but it's probably a pretty good go at recreating a sport that would be pretty impossible to get right, and some of the sound effects and music are great.
アトランチスの謎1) | ||
There's an unfinished NES port that was going to be titled Super Pitfall II
ハローキティワールド2) | ||
Hello Kitty themed port of the Game Boy game Balloon Kid, which is a fancy version of the original Balloon Fight's Balloon Trip mode.
ハローキティーのおはなばたけ3) | ||
Platformer where you have to water a bunch of flowers to complete stages. Watering each flower takes a few seconds. Kinda neat, nice graphics.
Kirby's Adventure | ||
Gave this a proper go in 2025 after, I think, just assuming that I'd played it emulated ages ago and thought it was just like Kirby's Dreamland with nice colours and the copy ability added. There's so much more to it though, it's really good, maybe my favourite after the GB game, or maybe I like the Switch one more… Oh right, I forgot my actual face kirbys_dream_course
Life Force / Salamander
… | ||
I think the only regional difference is that the Famicom version lets you use more options
Lost Word of Jenny | ||
Has one of the best main character sprites on the system. Some of the stages are really cool. I like the big flower one.
Rampart | ||
Famicom and NES versions are completely different games. NES is a straight arcade port, Famicom one is by Konami and features different cute graphics and level themes like tanks, animals, ninja, …
Route-16 Turbo | ||
Adventure game where you're a car. A bit like Venture, you move between a big map and smaller ones trying to pickup treasures and avoid enemies. Really cool.
Ruins of Zebes | ROM | |
This is a ROM hack of the NES version of Metroid that removes all the creatures. I thought it'd be nice to run and jump around and just look at things, but an interesting side effect is that it's actually quite tricky as your health and missiles only refill when you find upgrades.
オトッキー | Disk | |
Famous early music games by Toshio Iwai. Like Rez, shots are quantised to the beat, so you create music as a you play a shooter.
Pinball Quest | ||
Wario’s Woods | Cart | also on: GC (in Animal Crossing) SNES, Switch, Wii |
Mostly played this in Animal Crossing. It's a really solid puzzle game where you have to move things around with Toad. Sometimes I think I'll play a quick game and get sucked-in for an hour.
Zanac | Disk | |
Fast, smooth shooter from Compile. Really good. Price in 2023 still isn't bonkers either.
Pirate Carts

Good selection of games. Highlights are Life Force, Kick Master, Gun Nac, Guerilla War, Summer Carnival '92 Recca, Jackal. |
