The key to having fun with the fencer is equiping a set of weapons that'll allow you to dash cancel. Though at first blush they seem suuuuper slow, dash cancelling turns them into the fastest class! The basics are that you start to dash, then cancel it by using another weapon (best are shields and javelins), then dash again. This let's you repeatedly dash around, without having to wait for the dash to cool down.
