Brother HL-2132

hl-2132.jpg I believe an Australia-only model. Though there're similar-looking, though differently coloured, one availible elsewhere as the HL-22xx series.

It's a cheap ($30 new) monochrome, laser printer, that I've got a lot of use out of.

I've always bought generics.

models I've found that work fine:

  • TN-450
  • TN-2030
  • TN-2250

  1. Install CUPS
  2. Start CUPS service
    sudo systemctl start org.cups.cupsd.service
  3. Turn on the printer, plug it into a USB, then test to see if it's recognised
  4. Go to the CUPS web interface at http://localhost:631/
  5. Select 'Administration'
  6. Select 'Add Printer' under 'Printers', then enter your root user password (or add your user to the printer admin group [also see below]).
  7. Your printer should be shown in 'Local Printers', select it's radio button and select 'continue'.
  8. Make sure everything's to your liking on the next screen, then select 'continue'
  9. Again, just make sure things look goo then select 'Add Printer'
  10. On the select options screen you might want to change the 'Number of Input Trays'. I believe three is correct. Don't hot 'Set default options' till You've checked every page. You might want to lower the DPI and turn on 'toner saver mode', for example.
  11. Open a PDF or something and it should be working!

※ Set your default paper size in /etc/papersize. This also applies to other programs, for example Scribus

I made a new group called printadmin and added myself to it with:

  1. sudo groupadd printadmin
  2. sudo usermod -a -G printadmin [username]
  3. And added printadmin into

    to section

    # Administrator user group [...]
  4. Then restart CUPS service <code>sudo systemctl restart org.cups.cupsd.service<code>
